Top Reality Show Casts- The Osbournes

The reality TV show genre has been around since the 1980’s, but it really exploded around the year 2000.  Today there is a wide variety of different types of reality television shows out there including dating shows, makeover shows, cooking shows, ones that follow the lives of celebrities and more.  While many reality TV shows are competitions where cast members get voted or kicked off throughout the season, some feature a constant cast that viewers get to see each week and really get to know and love.

One reality TV show cast that viewers have fallen in love with is the Osbourne family, from the MTV reality show The Osbournes. The cast of The Osbournes did not include every member of the family; daughter Aimee refused to take part in the show. However, the show featured Robert Mercato, a family friend who Sharon Osbourne took in, as well as Melinda Varga, Sharon Osbourne’s executive assistant who also acted as a nanny to then-teenagers Jack and Kelly. The show debuted on March 5, 2002; right when reality programming began to explode in popularity. The Osbournes were one of a few shows that featured celebrity families at the time. Most other shows at the time focused on casts of known private individuals thrust into novel situations; The Osbournes featured well-known (at least on the part of Sharon and Ozzy) celebrities in their day-to-day life. The show would inspire other programs, such as Hogan Knows Best, Gene Simmons Family Jewels, and Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica.

The Osbourne family became popular, then, in part because there was a developing interest in the personal lives of celebrities. The viewing public had not had the chance to learn about the mechanics of everyday life for the child of a major rock star like Ozzy Osbourne. The Osbournes depicted the family as a relatively normal family, albeit wealthy and living in a prestigious and restricted area. The fighting between Kelly and Jack was the natural behavior of siblings, and Sharon and Ozzy’s relationship was clearly healthy. The show also provided fans of the metal artist with a truly behind-the-scenes look at his life, from appearances on television to touring preparations to something as simple as his breakfast and nighttime routine. The show would propel the careers of several of its cast: Kelly Osbourne went on to develop a career in the music industry as well as founding a fashion label of her own, and Jack made appearances in film and television before working steadily as a television personality for the ITV2 show Celebrity Wrestling: Bring It On! He went on to host his own program that featured himself training for various for extreme sports. Sharon Osbourne went on to host her own talk show as well as becoming a judge on The X Factor and America’s Got Talent.
